Curriculum - an overall view
The school and the governing body fully support a broad and balanced curriculum in line with the new National Curriculum (2014) as set out at: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-curriculum This involves teaching the children the skills they need to grow up with, the knowledge necessary to build up concepts and ideas and access to opportunities regardless of race, gender, class or religion. The children are taught on an individual basis, as a group or class as appropriate, allowing flexibility and the opportunity to learn within a supportive and sympathetic environment. We value our partnership with parents and involve them wherever possible in school activities; we always welcome any contribution they can make to enhance our curriculum. The involvement of the support services and other agencies of the Local Authority are requested in certain circumstances.
Curriculum - an outline
All children are special, having their own talents, abilities and interests, and we strive to ensure our curriculum meets their needs. Cross-curricular and subject specific themes are taught in each year group and across the school to meet the objectives set out in the National Curriculum. The subjects covered include: English, Mathematics, Science, Religious Education, PSHE, Art, Design Technology, Drama, Geography, History, Computing, Music, Spanish and Physical Education. The school has a wide range of policies covering the curriculum and other issues, which are available in school and some are on our website. A long term overview of the curriculum and objectives for each year group can also be accessed on our website. At the start of the academic year, each year group team presents an overview to parents which outlines the curriculum and activities for that year. Twenty-three and a half hours are spent by pupils on the curriculum during a normal school week. This excludes the time taken for assembly, registration and break (including lunch). There are four year groups in the school. The classes in each year group plan together, offering the same opportunities to each class in each year. The school aims to provide for progression and continuity in each area. Progression is monitored closely to ensure that individual children are progressing appropriately. Termly pupil progress meetings allow staff to review the progress of classes and identify and plan for any children who are not making expected progress. Records are kept for each child and passed on from teacher to teacher as the child progresses through the school. The governing body has an agreed policy on Sex and Relationships Education, which states that it should be taught in a manner appropriate to the age and development of the child. These lessons aim to help young people make responsible and well informed decisions about their lives and support them through their physical, emotional and moral development. Parents can withdraw their children from all or part of sex education, except those elements taught as part of National Curriculum Science. The school holds the Gold Healthy Schools standard as part of the Government’s programme that supports children in their Physical, Social and Health Education.
